About This Place

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco at 1501 Sloat Blvd Suite A, Ono Hawaiian BBQ offers an inviting slice of island life through its vibrant Hawaiian and American barbecue cuisine. This fast-casual restaurant expertly blends the freshness and bold flavors that define Hawaiian cooking, making it a standout choice for those craving a taste of the islands without leaving the city.

Ono Hawaiian BBQ’s menu is a treasure trove of carefully crafted dishes, each bursting with authentic flavor and satisfying textures. Among their star offerings, the Chicken Katsu truly shines—a crispy, golden-breaded chicken fillet drenched with their signature Ono Katsu Sauce, delivering a perfect balance of crunch and savory sweetness that leaves a lasting impression. Equally popular is the Teriyaki Chicken, where tender grilled chicken is generously coated in a glossy, house-made teriyaki sauce that glistens with umami richness.

The Aloha Plate Pick 2 invites diners to customize their meal, combining favorites like the smoky Kalua Pork and succulent BBQ Chicken for a hearty, flavorful experience. Seafood lovers will appreciate the Seafood Mix and freshly prepared Crispy Shrimp Keiki Meal, each offering delicate textures and perfectly balanced flavors that transport you straight to Hawaii’s sun-kissed shores.

What truly elevates the Ono Hawaiian BBQ experience is their attention to detail in the smallest accompaniments. Smooth, creamy macaroni salad served alongside fluffy steamed rice provide comforting complements, while the fresh Chicken Katsu Salad offers a delightful, lighter option brimming with crisp greens and savory chicken. For dessert, the Hula Guava Pie is a must-try—its flaky crust encases a vibrant tropical guava filling with a subtle glaze that’s both fruity and refreshingly sweet, an exquisite finish to your meal.

The ambiance strikes a casual, welcoming tone typical of fast food eateries but with a unique island flair that feels both authentic and relaxed. The space is carefully maintained, offering indoor seating alongside some pleasant outdoor options, perfect for families, solo diners, or groups eager to savor a quick yet memorable meal. While the restaurant lacks an on-site restroom, customers recommend stopping by nearby Peet’s Coffee beforehand to freshen up—a small note for consideration that doesn’t overshadow the overall inviting experience.

Patrons consistently praise the generous portions and bold tastes, with many highlighting the outstanding spicy chicken and exceptional macaroni salad. The staff’s friendliness and willingness to guide newcomers through the menu add a warm, personal touch, making every visit feel like a genuine Hawaiian welcome. Some reviews note variability in portion sizes and occasional dryness in dishes like the Kalua pork, yet the rich, satisfying flavors and commitment to quality keep guests coming back.

Whether you’re seeking a quick lunch, a casual dinner, or a fun meal with family, Ono Hawaiian BBQ captures the essence of Hawaiian comfort food with authenticity and heart. It’s a lively culinary retreat where every bite tells a story of island tradition, made fresh with passion and care right here in San Francisco.

Love the veggie, not sure if thy steamed or BBQ but it’s super sweet! The island fish with sauce was nice. The Kalua pork was a bit dry though

Had the chicken combo and the spicy chicken. The spicy chicken was by far the best. The teriyaki and other sauce were very good. My favorite was the macaroni salad! Yesica was excellent at helping us clueless Minnesotans figure out what we wanted. Overall decent "fast" food that isnt a burger or sandwich.

Cheap Hawaiian food chain. There's seating, bottled drinks, and cups for a drink fountain. The restaurant is clean-ish and there's some seating outside if you don't want to be inside. I ordered the chicken katsu plate lunch, which was $14.11 after tax. The chicken was tender, but quite greasy. There were also some massive pieces and some really tiny pieces, so not very consistent. The rice was cooked well and the blanched vegetables were nice. The macaroni salad was very filling and probably extremely unhealthy, but tasty. Overall, this is a decent place to stop by for a lunch. Everything is average-priced for San Francisco. The service and food leave a bit to be desired, which is why I'm giving four stars.

Awesome food here and good portion too. Food tasted great. Stop by Peet’s Coffee to grab coffee, use the restroom, and wash your hands before coming to eat in here. Unless you plan grab your food to-go then no need to wash those hands. Having a restroom or at least a sink for washing hands would be great and earn five stars.
